The Policies and Guidelines for Use of John R. Starr, Inc. Copyrighted Materials follow :

A. Copyright Statements

All information provided by John R. Starr, Inc. as set forth in this website, in any form, is proprietary to John R. All such information published by John R. Starr, Inc. or presented by its employees is copyright-protected inclusive of material appearing in a hard-copy format, electronically, or on our website. Because law does not require a copyright notice, the omission of the copyright notice by John R. Starr, Inc. does not invalidate copyright protection and does not indicate that John R. Starr, Inc. authorizes the reproduction of such proprietary material. Unless indicated otherwise herein, no portion of any materials, information, or data contained in this website may be modified, copied, sold, leased, distributed, transmitted or used for any commercial purpose or on behalf of any other person or entity without the express consent of John R. The United States Copyright Act gives the owner of a copyright the exclusive right to reproduce the copyrighted work, to prepare derivative works based upon the copyrighted work, to distribute copies and to display the work publicly. These rights apply to information that is purchased by our clients and information that John R. Starr, Inc. may choose to provide at no charge.

Violation of John R. Starr, Inc.'s copyright may permit John R. Starr, Inc. to recover actual damages, statutory damages, punitive damages and attorneys' fees through actions in U.S., international and foreign courts.

B. Acceptable Use

Acceptable Use is a privilege that allows users to make copies of copyrighted information without the specific consent of John R. Starr, Inc. in specific limited situations set forth below in Personal Use and Internal Presentations sections below. Such use may be permitted if the copying is for educational, personal or noncommercial use, where only a small portion of the materials is copied and where the copying does not have a negative impact upon the market for the copyrighted work.

Personal Use

John R. Starr, Inc. considers Acceptable Use to be the copying of John R. Starr, Inc.'s research for limited internal use only by employees of client companies. The limited use may be in discussions and for educational purposes but does not include use by sales or marketing groups for interaction with external customers. The number of copies should be limited to small working groups or small classes and all copies should include appropriate attribution and contain a statement that John R. Starr, Inc. owns the copyright to the material. If copies are needed for external use, we ask that you purchase reprints from John R. Starr, Inc. (refer to Section D).

Internal Presentations

John R. Starr, Inc. considers Acceptable Use to be the reproduction of John R. Starr, Inc.'s research for use in a presentation to individual employees within the same client company. If the research involves the use of graphs/charts, we request that the content be reproduced exactly as it appears with no modifications and that the source line includes the information supplied in our graphics/charts as well as the name John R. Starr, Inc., if John R. Starr, Inc. is not already identified as the source. Employees of clients who receive any of the limited number of copies of these presentations should be informed that the copies are not for external use outside the client company and not to be provided to non-employees, independent contractors or third-party consultants.

Unacceptable Use

Uses that conflict with John R. Starr, Inc.'s business practices or impair the market for John R. Starr, Inc.'s materials are not considered Acceptable Use. Unacceptable uses include, without limitation:

  • scanning or otherwise importing publications into an electronic storage/retrieval system.
  • broad distribution of publications to non-licensed units and employees of the organization through electronic data transmission systems such as electronic mail. Non-licensed units are defined as those over which the client company has less than 50% control.
  • distribution of publications to external organizations on hard copy or electronically such as via electronic mail.
  • distribution to client company salespeople who could use the publications for discussions with customers or prospective customers.
  • posting complete or partial sections of documents on an Internet site or on an intranet site that makes documents available to a non-licensed unit.
  • linking to material other than the Home Page on one of John R. Starr, Inc.'s World Wide Web sites – that is, accessing the server is prohibited without the express permission of John R. Starr, Inc.
  • using research or excerpts from research in public relations or sales campaigns.
